Limburgis a province inBelgium. It is the easternmost of the fiveDutch-speaking provinces that together form the Region of Flanders, one of the three mainpolitical and cultural sub-divisionsof modernBelgium.
Limburg is located west of theriver Meuse(DutchMaas), upon which it borders the similarly namedDutchprovinceLimburg. It also borders on the Wallonian province ofLiègeto the south, with which it also has historical ties.
Among these municipalities are the current capitalHasselt, the early medieval capitalBorgloon,Genk,Diepenbeek(home toHasselt University), andTongeren, the only Roman city in the province and regarded as the oldest city of Belgium.
