Zanzibaris asemi-autonomouspart ofTanzaniainEast Africa. It is composed of theZanzibar Archipelagoin theIndian Oceanand consists of many small islands and two large ones:Unguja(the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) andPemba. The capital isZanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre isStone Town, which is aWorld Heritage Site.

Zanzibar's mainindustriesarespices,raffia, andtourism.In particular, the islands producecloves,nutmeg,cinnamon, andblack pepper. For this reason, the islands, together with Tanzania'sMafia Island, are sometimes called theSpice Islands(a term also associated with theMaluku Islandsin Indonesia). Zanzibar is the home of theendemicZanzibar red colobus monkey, theZanzibar servaline genet, and the (possiblyextinct)Zanzibar leopard.
